3 Steps to Solve Problems, Fisherman-Style

Hi Reader,

Bottom Line Up Front: Like using the right fishing bait to catch a fish, use the right tool to create solutions to problems.

Let's keep this simple. My dear old dad from Kentucky loved the outdoors and was a master fisherman. He'd tell me stories about the fish he caught and how he caught them—always with the perfect bait. He could stand right next to you, use the right bait, and reel in fish all day while you struggled to get a single bite.

Whether we were after Smallmouth Bass with live minnows or a big Bluecat (Catfish) from Big Darby Creek with chicken livers from Kmart (yes, back in the day!), Dad always knew the right tool for the job. He solved the problem of hungry fish—and his hunger as a result.

The same principle applies to solving your problems. A challenge leaves you hungry for a solution, and finding the right tool is key. How do you do it?

Just like my dad mastered fishing and I learned to tackle challenges in the Navy, you can solve leadership problems with this simple 3-step process:

  1. Define the Problem: Write it down clearly and specifically.
  2. Brainstorm Solutions: List every possible way to achieve your desired outcome.
  3. Take Action: Use the tools you have right now—time and effort are always available.

Follow these steps, and you'll catch solutions as easily as my dad caught fish.

Vr,
Michael
